Spinal laminectomy is a decompression procedure designed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots caused by spinal stenosis, bone spurs, or thickened ligaments. By removing part or all of the lamina, the procedure widens the spinal canal and gives the nerves more room.
This surgery is most commonly recommended for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis who experience progressive leg pain, heaviness, or weakness when walking or standing. These symptoms often improve significantly once the source of compression is addressed.
How the Procedure Works
Dr. Waldron accesses the spine through a midline incision over the affected area. Using an operative microscope and microsurgical instruments, the lamina and any compressive bone spurs or thickened ligaments are carefully removed. The procedure typically addresses one or more vertebral levels depending on the extent of stenosis.

What Recovery Looks Like

Return to full activity usually takes six to twelve weeks.
