Microvascular decompression (MVD) is the definitive surgical treatment for trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes sudden, severe, electric shock like facial pain. The pain is typically triggered by everyday activities such as chewing, talking, brushing teeth, or even a light breeze.
In most cases, trigeminal neuralgia is caused by a blood vessel compressing the trigeminal nerve where it exits the brainstem. Over time, the pulsing blood vessel wears away the nerve’s protective coating, causing it to misfire. MVD addresses the root cause by separating the vessel from the nerve.
How the Procedure Works
Dr. Waldron performs MVD through a small opening behind the ear. Using an operative microscope, the trigeminal nerve is identified at the brainstem and the compressing blood vessel is carefully moved away. A small Teflon pad is placed between the nerve and the vessel to prevent recontact.

What Recovery Looks Like
Hospital stays are typically two to three days. Most patients experience immediate or near immediate relief from their facial pain. Some patients have temporary facial numbness, dizziness, or headache that resolves within a few weeks. Return to normal activities occurs within two to four weeks.
