What You Should Know

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical treatment that uses implanted electrodes and a pulse generator to deliver controlled electrical stimulation to specific areas of the brain. It is most commonly used for Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia.

DBS does not cure these conditions but can significantly reduce symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement, and involuntary movements. For many patients, DBS allows reduction of medication dosages and provides more consistent symptom control throughout the day.

How the Procedure Works

The procedure typically occurs in two stages. First, thin electrodes are precisely implanted into the targeted brain area using stereotactic guidance. In the second stage, a pulse generator is implanted under the skin near the collarbone and connected to the brain electrodes through extension wires.

What Recovery Looks Like

Hospital stays are typically one to two days for each stage. Initial programming begins two to four weeks after the pulse generator is implanted. Multiple programming sessions over the following months fine tune the stimulation parameters. Medications are gradually adjusted in coordination with stimulation settings.

How long does the battery last?

Non rechargeable batteries typically last three to five years. Rechargeable batteries can last up to 15 years. Battery replacement is a minor procedure that does not require reopening the brain.

DBS manages symptoms rather than curing the underlying disease. It can provide substantial improvement in quality of life, but conditions like Parkinson's disease may gradually change over time.
